Palliative Care and Bereavement Follow-Up
Home » Services » Inpatient » Palliative Care

Palliative care offers care and support to patients when a cure is no longer expected and prolongation of life is no longer appropriate. The purpose of the treatment is intended to improve their quality of life.

The team of caregivers is composed of specially trained volunteers, a nurse coordinator and a consulting physician. The team works closely with the staff on the units and the family physician. Members also consult the pharmacist, the pastoral service, the dietician or any other professional that is needed to fulfill the needs of the patient and/or his family.

The patients and their family are the core of the team… They are actively involved in the planning and implementation of their care. The team intervenes:

  • At the admission by:
    • evaluating the physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs as well as evaluating pain control
  • During hospitalization, the team provides:
    • a daily evaluation,
    • control of the pain and its symptoms,
    • weekly medical team rounds,
    • emotional support and
    • daily visits
Visitors are permitted at all times. Children are welcome. If the family wishes to stay overnight, a bed can be supplied in the room of the palliative patient.

Telephone calls are allowed at all times. You can reach a member of the team at 632-1111, extension 355. If necessary, a message may be left on the answering machine.

Volunteers can tape music for the patient and a radio-cassette player is available upon request.

The Palliative care service is available to patients who are referred by their treating physician.
